thredUP’s #NoNewGifts Challenge will Save Your Wallet and the Planet

Avoid Black Friday lines and shop used gifts online for everyone on your list, saving time and money, and reducing your eco-impact.

thedUP, the world’s largest resale marketplace, has launched a #NoNewGifts challenge for the holidays. #NoNewGifts highlights the financial and eco savings consumers can benefit from by shopping like-new gifts instead of new this season, and encourages everyone to consider buying used gifts instead of new this season to reap the resale benefits.

“The stigma of shopping used has all but vanished, so why does it still exist around gifts?” says Erin Wallace, thredUP Brand Director. “Today’s savvy consumer knows that shopping resale online will save her time and money, and it’s time to extend this lifehack to the holidays as well. It’s time to quit the cycle of waste around the holidays and do something good for our wallets and the planet.”

THE HOLIDAYS ARE GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE…

Holiday gifting is estimated to be a staggering $1 trillion market, and according to a recent survey, the average consumer says they will spend $1,250 each this holiday season — a 5% increase from last year.

Over half of that will be spent on gifts, with the average consumer saying they will buy 15 gifts this season. 48% of those gifts will be apparel.

…AND MORE WASTEFUL.

Over the holidays, American households generate 25% more trash — including wrapping paper and other gifting materials, not to mention unwanted gifts! That equals 1 million extra tons of landfill waste each year.

THE SOLUTION: GIFT GREEN WITH THRIFT.

Survey data shows that this holiday season nearly 40% of consumers say they are likely to shop with socially and environmentally responsible retailers, and 30% of consumers say they are likely to shop at secondhand retailers.

Shopping used is a smart choice for the planet — buying just one used garment extends its life by an average of 2.2 years, reducing its carbon footprint by 73%.

And the best part? Going green saves your wallet AND the planet. Shopping used can save you money, without having to sacrifice style. Over the past five years, thredUP customers have collectively saved $1.1B by shopping used instead of new, and the average person could save over $2,000 every year by making the switch to thrift!
