thredUP data reveals that February 24 through March 2 is the hottest time to sell your clothes this season.

Every year, thredUP prepares for a spring cleaning surge, when women across the country refresh their closets and send in their once-loved items to find new homes. With thredUP users in all 42,000 U.S. zip codes, the world’s largest fashion resale platform has the inside scoop on when is the most popular time to sell and which brands and styles are expected to sell fastest — and maybe even earn you more cash.

During the week of February 24 through March 2, thredUP will receive 40% more clean out bags than usual as early spring cleaners look for a responsible way to clean out their clothing and give it a new life.

  • During this time period last year, thredUP saw a 40% increase in clean out bags sent.

  • Items listed on thredUP sell up to 22% faster during the Seller’s Spree period.

  • Nearly 1/3 of Seller’s Spree items will sell within one week of listing.

thredUP found that not only are people cleaning out more during the Seller’s Spree, they are also refreshing their wardrobe with secondhand finds. According to 2019 sales data, thredUP predicts that nearly 1/3 of items sent in during the Seller’s Spree will sell within one week, and items listed during this period will sell up to 22% faster than the rest of the year.

For those who want to sell their items fast, the time is now to do your biggest closet purge of the year as spring cleaners are eager to refill their closets with a like-new spring staples.

“Women clean out and refresh their closets with thredUP all year long, but we see a huge spike in advance of spring cleaning, particularly late February and early March.” says Lindsay Martinsen, Senior Merchandiser at thredUP. “GenZ-favorite brands and styles such as Brandy Melville tees and Converse sneakers are rising in popularity, along with cause-driven brands such Patagonia, Reformation and TOMS. If you have these items in your closet, send them now and they’re likely to sell quick!”

Footwear, athleisure styles, and VSCO girl brands are flying off the secondhand shelves.

thredUP uncovered the brands and styles that are the most in-demand this season, meaning these brands and items are likely to sell quickly and earn you a bit more if you send them in during the Seller’s Spree. thredUP identified three top trends in the market right now:

  • Sales of VSCO girl favorites such as Vans slip ons, Levi’s denim, and Brandy Melville tees have been accelerating since November.

  • Athletic outerwear is popular among shippers, indicating consumers’ continued interest in finding classic workout gear for less — perhaps as they aim to New Year’s resolutions.

  • Classic boots from heritage brands such as FRYE and comfy sneakers from GenZ favorites Nike, Converse and Vans are also selling fast.

College towns win seller’s spree.

thredUP conducted a geo-study that revealed many of the U.S. cities with large concentrations of young, college-aged consumers tend to see the biggest spike in clean-out during the Seller’s Spree. Cities like Santa Cruz, Ann Arbor, Lexington, and Austin saw up to 140% more clean out bags sent in during this time last year compared to their yearly average. This may explain why thredUP data shows that VSCO girl styles favored by GenZ shoppers are on the rise.
