ThredUp Supports the Textile Waste Reduction Act
October 21, 2026 (Oakland, CA) - ThredUp is proud to support the Textile Waste Reduction Act, introduced by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) to establish a coordinated federal framework for reducing textile waste and advancing circularity.
The legislation would direct the Environmental Protection Agency to develop a National Textile Circularity Strategy, create an interagency working group and advisory board, and publish updated data on textile waste every year.
“As one of the largest online resale platforms for apparel, shoes, and accessories, we see every day what is possible when clothing stays in use,” said James Reinhart, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of ThredUp. “Keeping clothing in circulation is the highest-value outcome, while materials that cannot be reused need credible paths to recovery.”
ThredUp, a founding member of American Circular Textiles, would welcome the opportunity to serve as a resource to Congresswoman Pingree’s office and EPA as the strategy takes shape, including by sharing insights from its operations and contributing to any advisory or stakeholder processes the Act creates.
